In October this year, Frankie, a lively 3 year old Lab x Collie was having fun playing with a stick. Her owners heard her yelp. When they checked her they saw she had injured her mouth. A 3-4 inch stick had penetrated the right side of her tongue. Frankie's owners brought her down to the surgery as she was in pain and reluctant to let them get a good look at her tongue.

We couldn't see the extent of the damage to her tongue whilst she was awake, so she was admitted for a general anaesthetic.

While asleep we could see just how badly she had injured herself. The stick had gone all the way through her tongue narrowly missing major blood vessels.

The wound was flushed and cleaned thoroughly and several splinters were removed. Frankie was given pain relief and antibiotic treatment.

After a week the wound had closed and was healing well.

Unfortunately we do see stick injuries like this from time to time, as dogs really do love to fetch and chew them. We recommend dog toys are taken on those fun walks instead…….just in case.
