McLewis is a 2 year, 9 month old Spaniel. Like most Spaniels he likes nothing
more than running through the undergrowth at top speed!
His owner brought him to Cogges Veterinary Surgery urgently one morning as he
had suddenly starting sneezing up blood after a walk. McLewis was clearly
uncomfortable and although nothing abnormal was visible on initial examination,
we strongly suspected that McLewis had a foreign body in his nose or throat.
He was sedated to allow us to examine him more thoroughly. The back of his
throat was slightly inflamed but there was no evidence of a foreign body.
We then used a rigid endoscope (click to see larger picture)
to examine the nostrils.
The left nostril was normal but we could just see the tip of a dark
object approximately 2.5cm up his right nostril. This was carefully grasped
using a pair of long, angled forceps and revealed itself as a long twig!
McLewis recovered quickly from his sedation with no further sneezing or
nosebleeds. He was given a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory
medication and has now made a full recovery. He was very lucky that the stick
appeared to have caused minimal damage to the delicate tissues of his nose.
Although in this case McLewis ran into the twig by accident, it is important
not to throw sticks for your dog as they can cause terrible injuries if the dog
catches them awkwardly. Dogs love playing fetch, but please use toys
specifically designed for this purpose.
