The heroic pigeon

On the 17th September during a busy Friday evening surgery, a lady came in looking rather worried.

She was a lorry driver whose lorry was parked outside, and in the grille, on the front of the lorry, there was a pigeon. It was stuck tight, its wings caught in the mesh.

She explained that on her way home from Suffolk she had collided with a low flying bird. Arriving home, she noticed something moving in the grille and discovered that the pigeon had hitched a ride.

It took us several attempts to release the bird, by which time a small crowd of people had gathered to see what we were doing. Eventually he was set free and examined by one of our veterinary surgeons. Surprisingly, he had suffered only superficial wounds from his harrowing ordeal.

The pigeon was settled into a warm kennel with food and water and by the morning he was bright, alert and had eaten all his food.
A couple of days later he was collected by a wildlife organization for rehabilitation.

Let's hope that when he is released, he doesn't try and catch another free lift!!
