DSCF0441.jpg (119559 bytes)Tilly is a 10-month old terrier who, like most puppies, has a tendency to steal things she shouldn't.

However, Tilly nearly ended up in BIG trouble after stealing and eating some ibuprofen. Ibuprofen belongs to a class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which is an effective over-the-counter medication used to treat pain and inflammation in people. In dogs, ibuprofen can easily exceed toxic levels, causing ulcers, kidney failure, and, if left untreated, it can be fatal.

When Tilly was brought to us she was given a thorough examination, after which the case was discussed with the Veterinary Poison Unit, who are there to give advice on any potential toxic substances. On their advice she was given treatment and kept in for observation.

Fortunately, the next day Tilly seemed well and was sent home, but her worried owners had to wait another 2 weeks for the final blood test results, before she was given the all-clear.

Human tablets are often coated in sugar to help the medicine go down. Unfortunately this makes them particularly appealing to sweet-toothed pets. So please take care and store all human drugs away from animals and children.
